America’s Tech Giants Opt-Out of Idea of Being Regulated Like Utilities

Kenyan R. McDuffie, Councilmember for Ward 5, is entering his sixth year in office since being elected in the 2012 special election. McDuffie, a Democrat, replaced Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr., who was convicted of embezzling $350,000 in city funds. McDuffie won the special election with a little over 4,000 votes, breaking the hold the Thomas family held on Ward 5 since the 1980’s when Thomas’ father took office. McDuffie was overwhelmingly re-elected in November of 2012 for a full term.

During his term, Councilmember McDuffie had become a prominent member of the Council. He served as Chairman Pro Tempore since 2013. A position he was elected to by his colleagues. The committees he serve on include:

  • Transportation and The Environment
  • Finance and Revenue
  • Labor and Workforce Development

McDuffie’s current key piece of legislation is the Family Unit Amendment Act of 2017. The bill is designed to address the growing lack of affordable housing in the District of Columbia; particularly for larger families requiring 3 or more bedrooms. It requires that a percentage of funds disbursed from the Housing Production Trust Fund be used to assist in creating rental units with a minimum of 3 bedrooms. It requires the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development to submit a report to the Council of the District of Columbia that assesses large family units. This bill is currently under review.

McDuffie’s roots are well grounded in the DC metropolitan area. McDuffie grew up in Stronghold, a neighborhood in Ward 5 sandwiched between Trinity College and The Catholic University of America. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, briefly attended the University of the District of Columbia before graduating from Howard University summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 2002.  He received a juris doctorate from the University of Maryland School Of Law in 2006.

McDuffie announced his intent to run for a third term as the Ward 5 City Councilmember before an enthusiastic crowd at the Ivy City Smokehouse last November. He was supported by longtime residents of Ward 5 as well as Democratic Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, Justin Fairfax,  and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser who shared words of inspiration to the excited crowd.
